Happy Birthday Dr. Suess

In honor of Dr. Suess' birthday, we read one of his famous books The Lorax.  The Lorax is a speaker for the trees.  He works his hardest to stop the Oncelor from cutting down all of the Truffula Tress.  Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful.  All of the Truffula Trees were cut down to make Thneeds.  At the end of the book, the only way the Lorax could ever come back is if the final Truffula Tree seed was planted.  Today, we planted Truffula Tree seeds and brought the Lorax back!!!

Science & Math Updates

Math- we recently finished up a unit on multiplication and division.  We learned many different strategies for solving both multiplication and division problems.  Click here to learn how to use the Lattice Method for multiplication.  Click here to learn how to use the Partial Products method for multiplication.  Click here to learn how to use the Standard Method for Long Division.   Some students also enjoyed using repeated subtraction/equal groups strategy.  Unfortunately, I do not have a video for that.  Look below for students working together to solve some division problems.

Science- we just finished up a unit all about rocks!  We talked about volcanoes, learned about 2 different types of volcanoes, understood why some volcanoes explode and others don't, and also asked ourselves if a mountain could last forever.  Take a look below at all the fun we had!

Picture Book of the Month- January

January's Picture Book of the Month was Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, Jr. written by Jean Marzollo.  Remember, I cannot reveal why it was chosen but we were able to talk about the Civil Rights Movement, Civil Rights Leaders, and what Martin Luther King Jr. fought for.
